Staff Report

Berkeley Prep started the season 1-9, before going on a 15-2 run and earning a region final berth. Unfortunately for the Buccaneers, the incredible run ended in a 4-0 loss at Bishop Verot.

Berkeley ace Rivers Kurland held the Vikings scoreless through three innings, before Verot senior Jason Bello led off the fourth with a double and scored on a Carter Chalder bunt, Bello pushed the game out of reach an inning later with a three-run home run to left.

The Bucs best scoring chance came in the third, when senior Julius Pfau led off with a triple, but Berkeley Prep’s offense struggled against Vikings pitching, with starter Joey Lawson racking up 13 strikeouts in five innings, then turning things over to Bello, who struck out four in two relief innings.

Kurland worked six innings, allowing four runs on four hits and two walks, while striking out nine. He ends his junior season 9-1, with 1.49 ERA and 118 strikeouts.
