at Lennard

The Longhorns put away Saturday’s pool-play loss to Plant City to win two games decisively against Sickles and Gaither, advancing as a 2-1 finisher with a head-to-head win over the Gryphons. Lennard will continue hosting duty with two consolation games on its field at 1pm & 4pm, before welcoming Jesuit (home team in game) for the Saladino Gold Division semifinal matchup.

#2 Sickles 11, Plant City 3

Sickles scored 11 runs in the first three innings as the Gryphons improved to 2-1 in pool-play behind a 2-for-3 game from Jordan Yost, who singled in a pair in the second and had an RBI sac fly in the third. Brandon Gonzales allowed two runs across four innings, while striking out five to earn his third win of the year. Jaden Nazar (two runs) and Thomas Bly (double, RBI, two runs) each had two-hit games, and Ben Durda earned a three-inning save with four strikeouts. Drew Cothren went 2-for-3 for the Raiders and Jackson Carbaugh was 1-for-3 with a run and RBI.

Lennard 8, #8 Gaither 0

Lennard junior Pablo Garcia held the Gaither offense to three hits in his five innings on the mound, striking out eight to earn the win. JV Brennick finished the final two innings without allowing a base runner and striking out four. A second inning RBI ground ball from Kevin Hunter put the Longhorns on the board, Cole Montgomery (run) and Mattie Counts (two RBI) were both 2-for-4 with a double.

at Strawberry Crest

Jesuit wrapped up pool play 3-0, the only team in the Saladino Gold Division tournament to still be undefeated, and will be in the home dugout for Wednesday’s semifinal. But that game will be held in Ruskin by site host Lennard, at 7pm.

Newsome 2, #7 Strawberry Crest 1

Newsome pitchers Aiden Dolan (Win; 3ip, 4 hits, K), Roman Bovelsky (2.1ip, H, 3K’s), and Isaiah Sanchez (Save; 1.2ip, BB, 3K’s) held Strawberry Crest to one unearned run as the Wolves picked up its second win against the Chargers in two weeks. An RBI sac Fly from Drew Mega got the Wolves on the board inn the second, and an Anthony DeVito run-scoring single gave Newsome the cushion it would need for the win. Strawberry Crest scratched back a run in the sixth, loading the bases when Toby Highsmith scored as a dropped third strike extended a two-out situation.

#3 Jesuit 7, Leto 4

Jesuit wrapped up pool play as the only undefeated team in the Gold Division tournament, but were tested by Leto in Tuesday’s nightcap at Crest. The Tigers strung together three singles, two hit batters a walk and a productive ground out to score four runs in the sixth for a come-from-behind victory for the second-straight night. Noah Sheffield was 2-for-3 in the win with three RBI, including the single that gave Jesuit the lead for good; Monday night’s hero DJ Pirela stayed hot with a 2-for-4, two run game; and Ryan Thompson struck out three in two scoreless innings of relief to earn the win.

Jefferson wins the runs-allowed tie-breaker after finishing pool-play 2-1 along with Plant and  Bloomingdale. The Dragons allowed 10 runs, while the Bulls and Panthers each allowed 15. Jefferson will host Tampa Catholic (lower seed) in the semifinal game at 7pm. 

Plant 11, #9 Bloomingdale 5

An RBI double from Vinny Dinzeo and a Cooper Hinson RBI single spotted Bloomingdale an early lead, but Plant came charging back with a 10-run fifth, behind RBI doubles by Rocco DeMarinis (3-for-3, run) and Matthew Midyett, and a two-run triple by Danny Cerelli (2-for-4, four RBI, run). DeMarinis pitched six innings of relief earning the win, allowing three runs and striking out four. Dinzeo was 2-for-4, adding a two-run homer in the seventh, finishing with four RBI for the Bulls.

Jefferson senior Cameron Mallo struck out eight in a complete-game on the mound, allowing one run on four hits and one walk. He also helped his own cause with a 2-for-4 night at the plate, scoring once and driving in a run. Alliuq Troupe was 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI and a run; Cameron Copple was 2-for-3 with a double and scored twice, and Hayden Sekanick (two runs, RBI) and Moises Gudino (two RBI, run) each had two hits in the win. For Wharton, J Delgado singled to lead off the third inning and with two outs, Drew Cobb drove him in from second with a single.

Tampa Catholic advances as it won the head-to-head game against the pool’s other 2-1 team, Durant. The Crusaders will travel to Jefferson (higher seed) for Wednesday’s semifinal game at 7 pm.

Gehrig Graham pitched five shutout innings, allowing three hits and struck out four as Durant won its final pool game against Alonso. Chase Mobley was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to plate the Cougars first run in the third. A wild pitch added another run, before Noah Morales hit a three-run home run to left, and Jackson McClellan doubled in a run in the sixth. Carson Vega went 2-for-3 for Alonso.

The Warriors closed out the Saladino pool-play round with a seventh-inning win against Tampa Catholic, ending a five-game skid. Noah Fowler singled in both the first and seventh inning, and both times was driven in RBI singles by Kason Bell. Senior Jorge Romero gave Steinbrenner six innings, allowing just one unearned run on three hits, with four strikeouts; and Kelton Meares worked around a leadoff Alex Sotiropoulos single with a strike-em-out, throw-em-out double play when catcher Dominic Sardegna threw out a stealing runner. For the Crusaders, Jake Owen struck out two, while allowing one run; Vito Arena worked a scoreless inning; and Trevor West pitched two innings and allowed one run, with two strikeouts.

Tyson Boyd singled in a Robinson run in the second inning, and Nathan Porath delivered seven innings on the mound with seven strikeouts, but he was denied the win as the Terriers scored on an error and would force extra innings. Robinson’s victory would come in the eight as Brady Capps doubled, Samuel Hyman moved him over with a single and an intentional walk loaded the bases, where speed-up runner Carsyn Clack would end the game, scoring on a passed ball. Kyler Martin pitched six innings for the Terriers, striking out eight and allowing one run on five hits.

Riverview strolled into the win column, drawing 12 walks and scoring 10 runs with just four hits on Tuesday. Freshman lefty Parker Burt gave the Sharks 5 1/3 innings of work to earn his first varsity win with five runs allowed and seven strikeouts. Ronald Blake led the offense going 1-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI. Freedom put up 11 hits, led by Cade Hoffman, who doubled, drove in a pair and scored two; and Liam Harris, Dane Mobley, Jacob Antle (double), and Brayden Nanns – each with two hits.

Javier Suniaga (2-for-4) doubled in a pair with a line drive to right as Armwood rallied for a win in the sixth inning. Senior Matthew Hall pitched four innings in his start for the Hawks allowing one earned and striking out three, before Rhys Brush finished the game with three scoreless innings and six strikeouts earning the win. Cyrus Shokrani had an RBI for the Crusaders, Colin Patten went 3-for-4, and William Rudometkin pitched five innings, allowing one run and striking out three.

Stingrays senior Avry Charland spun a six-inning shutout with two hits allowed and four strikeouts, while Sumner’s offense put up 10 runs on 11 hits. Sebastian Peralta was 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI; Isaiah Welch was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored; and Ethan DeJesus went 2-for-4 with a triple, run, and three RBI.

The Saladino Bronze Division Championship is set for Wednesday from Tampa Bay Tech at 7pm, as East Bay, winners of five-straight will take on Hillsborough County’s last remaining unbeaten, Carrollwood Day School.

East Bay 8, Cambridge Christian 5

Marlon Garcia drove in a run on a sacrifice fly and an RBI single, and Rory Beauford Jr. was 2-for-3, with a two-run home run that tipped the game in favor of East Bay to close out pool play. Andrew Gingrich had three hits (double) and scored three times, Shawn Dowe was 2-for-3, scoring twice, and Derek Gutierrez earned the win on the mound. The Indians are 3-0 in the Bronze Division and will face Carrollwood Day for the tournament championship. Cambridge Christian eighth grader Blake Hafner was 2-for-3, with a double and two RBI, and Trigg Listerman was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Chamberlain’s Yadiel Garcia threw a five-inning perfect game with six strikeouts as the Storm defeated Brandon, and the senior was 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and three driven in. Jonathan Torna went 4-for-4 in the game with two RBI and a run, and Kenneth Madrid, Benjamin Garcia, and Handel Alvarez each chipped in two hits in the victory.

Brooks DeBartolo junior Messiah Williams out-dueled Spoto senior Peyton Nisy, as both provided complete-game efforts. Williams struck out eight, allowing just two hits and two walks to earn his second win of the year. Nisy allowed two runs on eight hits and finished with six punch-outs for the Spartans. Joe DiCecco singled for the Phoenix in the first inning and scored the deciding run on a passed ball. Brooks DeBartolo got an insurance run in the fourth on an RBI single by Aiden Brown.

Carrollwood Day wrapped up its spot in the Bronze Division Championship with a mercy-rule win against Tampa Bay Tech, as Logan Babb (Win; 4ip, BB, 3K’s) and Caleb Nursey (1ip, R, 3 BB, K in his pitching debut) held the Titans hitless. The Patriots got on the board on an RBI single from Julian Earle, who would also score three times in the win, and Allen Soriano (two RBI) and JD Howard both had doubles.

Kyle Brill doubled in a pair of runs in the second inning and secured his third save of the season with two innings on the mound for Tampa Prep in the Florida League Classic Tournament in Sanford. Liam Akins was 2-for-2, with a walk and two runs scored, Jordan Della Roca went 2-for-3, with a run and RBI, and Lincoln Bailey earned the win on the mound with four strikeouts and only one earned allowed in his 3 2/1 innings.

Berkeley Prep pitchers struck out 11 against Osceola, but the Warriors put up a five-spot in the fifth inning and pulled away from the Buccaneers. Cord Gerdes singled to lead off the fifth, and an error and wild pitch allowed him to get the scoring going, followed two more runs scoring on errors before Eli Daraphet sealed the victory with a two-run single. Jett Walters went 2-for-4 with a double and RBI and Rivers Kurland doubled and scored a run in the loss.
