Tampa Prep 2, Calvary Chr 0

To take down a team that hadn’t lost a regular season game in more than two years, everything had to go right, and according to Tampa Prep head coach AJ Hendrix the Terrapins showing on the road at district opponent Calvary Christian was about as close to perfect as can be expected.

“It took a near perfect game from us to get it done,” Hendrix said. “We hustled the whole game, and in the end took advantage when we were given the chance.”

Senior Gilbert Marquis gave his team everything he had, literally pitching to the high school limit of pitches to finish off the complete-game shutout, allowing just three hits and striking out four.

“Gilbert battled the whole way for us,” Hendrix said. “He’s a guy who has been committed to this program for four years and this was him all the way tonight. He went 105 pitches, which was the limit and pitched a great game for us.”
 
Backing him up the Terrapins got some solid defense from catch Charlie Vari, who has been a battery-mate with Marquis since middle school and Hendrix said is the team’s “general on the field,” and solid play from shortstop Lucas Harman, including a great stop up the middle early in the game. 
 
Harman also keyed the seventh inning heroics, legging out a ball with two outs and forcing a bad throw to allow the deciding run to score and added some insurance stealing second and then drawing another bad throw, scoring the second run. 
 
The Terrapins faced all three of Calvary Christian’s NCAA Division I committed pitchers as Liberty signee Josh Emerson held Tampa Prep hitless through three, Penn State commit Brayden Halladay allowed just three hits, before TCU signee Nolan Hudi took the tough loss on two unearned runs. 
 
“To do it against their top three guys on the mound that’s pretty special,” Hendrix said. “It was definitely a great night for the Terps!”

Tommy Malouf (double) and Michael Mullins were 2-for-4 with a run scored each, a Garrett Reynolds had an RBI. For Gaither, Derek Crum had a double and an RBI.

Brian Baughman was dominant on the mound, allowing just one hit and one walk in a complete-game shutout win over Freedom. The senior finished the day with 13 strikeouts and also doubled and scored a run in the win. Grady Maguire cashed in two runs on a double of his own in the Wildcats’ four-run first innings, finishing 3-for-4 with another double later in the game. Zach Ehrhard went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.
