Hillsborough senior Terence Doston said as he walked to the plate with a runner aboard in the fifth inning, his coaches told him what he already knew – that he was a home run away from the cycle. Doston worked the count full, before slashing a line drive past the right fielder. To the defenders credit he turned and hustled after the ball that would have decided the game by scoring the mercy-rule run any way, but it allowed the speed of the two-sport standout and West Virginia commit to be put on display as he flashed around the bases and slid home for a walk-off, inside-the-park home run.”I’m not stopping, that was my thought,” Doston said. “As I was coming out of the dugout, my coach was like if you hit a home run it’s the cycle, so in my head I was thinking if I square this ball up, I’m not stopping.”

A Danny Santana RBI ground out and a Kendal Spencer run-scoring single in the second inning proved the difference as Brandon topped Chamberlain in the nightcap. Phredro Drayton added an RBI triple to the Eagles offensive night and made a great throw in the sixth from the catcher’s position to get a would-be stealing runner at third. Jonnel De La Rosa worked five-plus innings on the mound to earn the win striking out five and allowing one run. For Chamberlain Brayden Moyer singled in Manny Caballero (2-for-4) in the fifth inning.

Senior Javy Hernandez was 2-for-4 with a double and four RBI, RJ Gutierrez scored a pair and had two doubles, while Damien Breton and Brayan Cruz each scored three runs and Tomas Lozano had a pair of hits and two RBI. For East Bay, Hans Walker and Zack Berry (run, RBI) each had two hits in the game.

A three run third inning from the Wolves keyed by a Kelson Johnson RBI single and a two-run double from Cole Stallings proved the difference as Newsome improved to 2-0 in Pool 2. Sawyer Smith and Lucas Phelps added to the Wolves offense with two hits and two RBI each, while Josh Pitre’s 4 1/3 innings on the mound proved enough for the win. King was led by Matthew Johnson who was 3-for-4 with a double, a run and an RBI, and an RBI double from Jacob Cordell.

The Patriots got a bases clearing double from Blake Hooker, but Longhorns reliever Randy Tavarez came in to strikeout a pair and prevent further damage, and then finished the game to earn the save.

Sophomore Ben Vazquez earned the win on the mound, allowing one run and striking out four, while Alfredo Melendez (four K) and Justin Childs (two K) worked in relief for the Cowboys. For the Titans Elijah Dukes was 3-for-3, with two RBI, and senior Joe Lewis was 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Kyle Knees worked 4 1/3 innings on the mound allowing no runs on just one hit and striking out three. Riverview looks to advance out of Saladino pool play for the sixth straight season with a win over the Titans tomorrow. For Freedom, Sebastian Burgess was 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored, and Jason Hall drove in a pair.

After battling to a stalemate through six innings, Plant escaped with a 1-0 win over Brooks DeBartolo when Matthew Ward drew a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the seventh. Ryan Bradarich worked 6-plus innings on the mound for the Phoenix, being tagged with the loss after striking out four. On the other side, Jac Caglianone made his debut on the mound for the Panthers working five innings, allowing just one hit and striking out three, before turning things over to Matt Coker, who earned the win with two shutout innings, allowing just three hits.
