Carrollwood Day’s Danny Vassallo, who threw six innings of a no-hitter last Friday, pitched a perfect game on Thursday against New York’s St. Francis. Vassallo, a junior, struck out eight in the win.

Carrollwood Day junior Danny Vassallo, who went six-strong in a no-hitter at Bell Creek last Saturday, threw his first-ever perfect game as the Patriots defeated visiting Saint Francis (Athol Springs, NY). Vassallo struck out eight in the win, and earns his sixth win of the year.

Plant City junior Tyler Dowdy struck out nine in a five-inning no-hitter over East Bay on Thursday. The game started with a Raiders error, and Plant City had a second error on the field to keep the effort from a perfect game. Casey Mawhinney hit his first home run of the season, in a two-hit night, and junior Cole Cothren drove in three runs for the Raiders.

Brendon Gerena-Lee (three innings, five strikeouts), Ethan Byrd (two innings) and Reece Black held the Heat without a hit, allowing just one run on a trio of walks in the fourth. At the plate Dante Portillo homered and drove in a pair and Gerena-Lee had a triple and four RBI.

Michael Swanson’s three-hit, three-RBI, three-run night sparked the offense, which also saw Ben Maskin hit a home run and drive in three.

Strawberry Crest earned a little payback defeating Wharton in a big district game on Thursday. Senior Benny Pues got things rolling for the Chargers with a two-run home run in the first, and Crest added to it a few innings later with an RBI double by Ryan Dell. The Wildcats tried to mount a rally with a run in the third, but the Chargers would add another run to push them out ahead making two Wharton runs in the sixth fall just shy of a comeback. Senior Alex Marshall earned the win on the mound, and Kade Manderscheid finished things off earning the save with two no-hit innings.
