Bell Creek 0 – five innings

Tampa Catholic added five more runs today to take a mercy-rule district semifinal win against Bell Creek after weather delayed the game after three innings last night. Senior Vincent Docbo’s RBI single gave the Crusaders the early lead in the first, and he would add a two-run double to end the game early in the fifth. Hershey Sanchez was 2-for-3, with a run and three RBI for Tampa Catholic, and Tony Calvo was 2-for-3 with two RBI adding to the run total. Bransen Angel allowed just one hit in four innings of work with six strikeouts, and Roman Corinit struck out the side in his lone inning of work. Tyler Fritsch’s double was Bell Creek’s lone hit of the game.

Jefferson 1 – six innings

Jesuit senior Carter French cleared the bases last night with a triple before weather halted the district semifinal game against Jefferson, and did it again after it resumed on Wednesday as the Tigers cruised to a mercy-rule win and into Thursday’s district final game against Freedom at home. Jack Martinez (two runs), Jacob Lozano (run), and Clay Thompson (homer) each had two hits for the Tigers. Jayden Vazquez singled in Jefferson’s lone run, while Alejandro Aguilar, Cam Copple and Anthony Linares had doubles for the Dragons. Jamie Arnold tossed three innings to earn the win, while Drew Hunt (two innings, one run) and Brooks Chamberlin (one inning, one strikeout) pitched in relief.

Tuesday’s weather forced a postponement, then venue change with in the semifinal between Brandon and Sumner – and the Stingrays made the most of home-field advantage rallying from a first-inning deficit, then breaking a tie when an error allowed Manny Ramos to score the deciding run in the sixth, a second run in the frame on a passed ball to get out ahead. Gabe Mangual was 3-for-4 with three RBI for Sumner. Senior Fisher Smith was 1-for-3 with a two-run single in the first for Brandon, and Josh Blake lined a single into left in the third for the Eagles final run of the game. Sumner, in just its second season, reaches the district final, traveling to top-seeded Braden River on Thursday night.

Gaither and Leto returned to the field on Wednesday knotted at two and pushed through three scoreless innings before senior Israel Oliva (2-for-4, double) picked up his second RBI hit of the game to kick off a three-run sixth for the Cowboys. The run support was all sophomore Michael Fernandez needed to close the door on the Falcons with 4 2/3 innings of shutout baseball, striking out eight. Anthony Dimillo doubled and scored twice for Gaither. Leto senior Coltin Pizzio was 2-for-3 with a double, scoring a run in the first inning.

Jack Owens (1-for-4, RBI) delivered a complete-game, three-hit gem as the Bulls offense bashed out 15 hits to take a district semifinal win over Lennard Wednesday afternoon. Tephen Montgomery doubled to start of the second inning, eventually scoring on an Alex Vazquez (3-for-3, three RBI) sac bunt to give the Bulls the deciding run. Drake Harman was 2-for-3 with a double, stole a pair of bases and drove in a pair, Dawson Harman homered, and Colby Shelton had three hits, including a double and scored a run.

Armwood 6 – five innings

Strawberry Crest jumped out to a solid lead prior to weather pausing Tuesday’s district semifinal game against Armwood, and the Chargers added one more run to its seven-run second inning only to see the Hawks rally back with two strong innings of scoring. But the Chargers offense proved too potent as Arjun Nimmala (2-for-2, homer & two walks) led off the fourth with a double, scored on an Eli Vickers double and sparked a five run inning to push the game out of reach. Armwood senior Justin Corns was 4-for-4 with two runs scored, Austin Leever drove in a pair, and KJ Leshko was 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. Akhil Nimmala was 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI for the Chargers, and Alex Philpott drove in three in the win.

Evan Dempsey won out in a pitcher’s duel against Lakewood Ranch junior Cole Dement as both pitchers went the distance for their teams. Ethan McSpadden reached on a single in the fourth, moved to second on and error, third on a balk and scored on a Lucas Phelps RBI lineout for the game’s only run. Dempsey allowed four hits and two walks in seven innings, striking out seven to earn his sixth victory of the season; while Dement pitched six innings, striking out five and giving up two hits and two walks.

Steinbrenner 0 – five innings

A two-run double from Bryce Pelleriti in the first inning on Tuesday night proved decisive, even if the Panthers’ win took nearly 21 hours to complete. Plant advances to Thursday’s district championship (at home against Alonso) with a mercy-rule win against the Warriors. Tanner Swank highlighted a six run fourth inning with a grand slam (his first-ever home run!), Jack Meade was 2-for-3 with a triple and scored twice. Robert Satin (2-for-3, run, RBI) pitched 2 2/3 innings to earn the win, allowing two hits, and Thomas Bolton finished out the game with 2 1/3 hitless innings.
