1. Bloomingdale (16-3)
Bulls senior Hayden Porter
Last Week: Win, 6-0 v Riverview; Win, 5-1 at Sumner; Win, 11-0 v Chamberlain
The Bulls have run the current win-streak to six games and remain in the top spot for the second-straight week. Bloomingdale starting pitchers Vaughn Osting, Hayden Porter and Javier Navas-Hoyer combined for 16 innings last week and allowed just one total earned run, while striking out a combined 24 – with Osting’s 11 against Riverview leading the way; and sophomore Jack Grant was 2-for-3 against Chamberlain with the first two doubles and two RBI of his varsity career.
This Week: v Spoto (Tues); at Armwood (Thurs); v Leto (Sat)
T-2. Newsome (16-3)
Last Week: Win, 7-1 v Spoto; Win, 4-2 at Durant; Win, 14-4 v Robinson
We’re more than content letting the Wolves and Chargers take this tie to the 7A-7 district tourney as these two teams have been excellent. Newsome avenged its last loss with a win at Durant with JP Glassford striking out nine, and Aiden Dolan had nine punchouts against Spoto. Offensively, Anthony DeVito had himself a week going 5-for-8, with two doubles, a home run, five RBI and six runs scored.
This Week: at East Bay (Tues); at King (Thurs)
T-2. Strawberry Crest (16-4)
Last Week: Win, 15-0 at Tampa Bay Tech; Win, 7-0 at Bishop McLaughlin; Win, 17-2 v Middleton; Win, 8-0 v Lennard
The Chargers went 4-0 last week and took care of business. Reuben Vasquez, Dillon Knight and Brisen Tweedy hit homers; Saxon Shah earned two wins, Asher Stolzfus and Tweedy earned the others; 36 hits in 19 offensive innings; and two runs allowed in 20 innings pitched. Pretty solid week. This is the exact kind of challenge the Chargers need in two very good teams on deck this week.
This Week: at Wharton (Mon); v Alonso (Thurs)
4. Berkeley Prep (16-4)
Berkeley Prep sophomore Lucas Farrar
Last Week: Win, 8-5 at Northside Christian; Win, 2-1 v Carrollwood Day; Win, 4-3 at Sarasota Cardinal Mooney
Winning the close games matters. Of Berkeley’s four losses, only March 22nd’s 4-2 loss to Key West was by more than one run, so the Bucs should be really pleased with last week’s performance. The Bucs tied in the seventh then won in the eighth at Northside Christian, took a two-run lead on CDS and held on 2-1, and then battled it out for a 4-3 win at Cardinal Mooney on Saturday. Parker Mitzel homered, doubled twice and drove in seven; Rivers Kurland struck out 10 against CDS; Josh Herrmann went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI against the Mustangs; and Lucas Farrar went 2-for-3 against Mooney.
This Week: at Tampa Prep (Tues); v Lemont, Ill (Wed); at Lakewood Ranch (Fri)
5. Sickles (15-5)
Sickles junior Zach Dial
Last Week: Win, 8-7 v Alonso; Win, 5-4 v Parkland Stoneman Douglas; Win, 4-3 at Plant; Win, 14-4 v East Bay
The Gryphons battled to one-run wins over our Nos. 8 & 6 teams from Week 6, took down the No. 1-ranked team in the FHSAA Parkland Stoneman Douglas (halting a 16-game win streak for the four-time defending state champion Eagles), and rounded out the week with a decisive win against East Bay. Zach Dial had five hits, two runs and an RBI at the plate, and earned the save against Douglas; Jaden Nazar was 7-for-10 on the week with a double, four runs and three RBI; and Brandon Gonzales homered twice, earned the win over Douglas and drove in eight.
This Week: v Blake (Tues); at Gaither (Thurs); v Dunedin (Fri at TD Ballpark)
6. Tampa Catholic (16-4)
Tampa Catholic junior Talan Miranda
Last Week: Win, 15-5 v Brooks DeBartolo; Win, 6-1 v Jesuit
The Crusaders got a team win over BDCHS with 12 batters picking up hits behind three shutout inning from Jack Giovenco on the mound (3ip, 3 H, 5 K), but it was Friday’s performance from Talan Miranda that highlighted the week for Tampa Catholic. The junior righty held Jesuit to a single hit and three walks over 5 2/3 innings, while striking out six before senior Dominic Woodward finished off the final four outs giving up just one unearned run. Cole Bitman and Lucas Cinnante each singled in a pair in the second inning to put the game out of reach.
This Week: v Hamilton (OH) Badin (Thurs); v Sarasota Cardinal Mooney (Fri)
7. Wharton (16-3)
Last Week: Win, 3-2 v Freedom; Win, 14-2 at Chamberlain; Win, 8-1 at Leto
This list is so tough to do some times, and Wharton at 16-3, probably deserves better than seventh place. But, do what they’ve been doing (and what the teams ahead of them have done) and keep winning and things should take care of themselves. The Wildcats picked up three more wins last week: a walk-off win courtesy of Jarius Morris’ second RBI against Freedom; a three-double, five-RBI game from Justis Meadows in a win against Chamberlain; and Connor Evans striking out seven in six innings against Leto.
This Week: v Strawberry Crest (Mon); at Jefferson (Thurs); at Indian Rocks Christian (Fri)
8. Jesuit (14-6)
Last Week: Loss, 7-4 v Parkland Stoneman Douglas; Win, 4-2 v Orlando The First Academy; Loss, 6-1 at Tampa Catholic
Jesuit is 5-5 over its last 10 games and offensive production is a little down. The Tigers have a tough three-game slate this week, including a second go against MaxPreps Florida No. 1 IMG, and Plant. Cannon Murtagh had a three-hit game against SD; Jack Morton dropped down a perfect suicide squeeze to beat TFA; and Kaden Waecther returned from a preseason knee injury with productive at-bats in each game.
This Week: v Hamilton (OH) Badin (Tues); v IMG Academy (Thurs); v Plant (Fri)
9. Plant (14-5)
Last Week: Win, 10-0 v Blake; Loss, 4-3 at Sickles; Win, 12-1 v Tampa Bay Tech
Plant dropped a close one to the Gryphons last week, but took care of business against Blake and TBT. Urban Ellis went 5-for-8, with six RBI and five runs; Wyatt Patterson was 6-for-9, with five RBI and three runs; Brody Vermette and Bo Allen each had two doubles; and Cash Strayer had a home run.
This Week: at Gaither (Mon); at Jesuit (Fri); v Riverview (Sat)
10. Gaither (13-7)
Last Week: Win, 6-3 v Jefferson; Win, 12-0 at Riverview
The Cowboys hit four doubles in each of its two wins last week, turning an early lead against Jefferson into a win behind four strong innings from junior Matt Altman (Win, 0 ER, 2 H, 6K). Ryder Warriner was 4-for-6 on the week with 6 RBI; Angel Hernandez went 5-for-7, with two 2B, and four runs; Ryan Deak had a double and three RBI; and Jackson Mirza was 3-for-6 with two doubles, three runs, and a save.
This Week: v Plant (Mon); v Sickles (Thurs); at Freedom (Fri)
