CDS fires Brewington, seeks seventh coach in 10 years

Tony Brewington said he was “caught off guard” when he was let go at the end of the season after four seasons, despite leading Carrollwood Day to back-to-back region tournaments. CDS is now in search of its seventh head baseball coach in 10 years.

CARROLLWOOD – After four seasons leading the Patriots – including a program-high 25 wins in 2024, and back-to-back region playoff appearances – Tony Brewington said he has been let go as head coach at Carrollwood Day.

Brewington led the Patriots to a 67-41 record since being hired prior to the 2022 season, taking CDS from an 11-win team in his first two years to winning a school-record games and reaching the region final in 2024, and this year going 17-10 while reaching the Saladino Tournament semifinal, finishing as the district runner-up and reaching the region semifinal.

“This really caught me off-guard,” Brewington said. “I haven’t had too much time to think about it, but I feel like everything we did while I was there speaks for itself. Prior to me getting there, I know there had been a track record of not (retaining) coaches. It’s crazy to think that I’m actually the second-longest tenured coach in the program.”

Brewington’s four seasons indeed have him second in tenure with the Carrollwood Day baseball program, trailing only Nick Rodriguez, who coached the team for five seasons from 2013-17.

Carrollwood Day now searches for its seventh coach in the last 10 seasons, and though coaching turnover in high school baseball is not uncommon, Brewington expressed frustrations at what he sees as a pattern of coaching inconsistency for a school that has been fairly successful athletically.

“I feel like the inconsistency of the athletic department over there has to change,” Brewington said. “I think (CDS’) athletics are out-growing the school, that’s the truth. It’s really starting to happen and they aren’t prepared for it. For whatever reason, they are unable to keep good coaches.”

Brewington said he is interested in continuing to coach at the high school or collegiate level full-time, and recently accepted the position as manager of the Bradenton Juice for the collegiate summer Florida Gulf Coast League, which begins its season in June.

Two voicemails left by 813Preps for Carrollwood Day athletic director Barry Chamberlain over the last two weeks went unanswered.
