Harman’s three-hit game pushes Bulls over Warriors

Bloomingdale senior Dawson Harman pops up at third after his first inning triple. Though Harman wouldn’t score here, he would add a single, double and walk, driving in a pair and scoring twice in the Bulls Saladino Tournament opener.

DOVER – Bloomingdale senior Dawson Harman was tired of seeing Steinbrenner in the Saladino Tournament, and not finding any luck. In Harman’s previous two tournaments, the Bulls have played the Warriors and been turned away, as Steinbrenner claimed a 12-inning win last season, 3-2; and defeated Bloomingdale 11-7 in 2021. Albeit the 2021 loss sparked a 15-2 run as Bloomingdale claimed a program-first state title that season.

Still, Harman wanted to make sure he got one off the Warriors in his Saladino career, and did just that going 3-for-3 with a triple, double and walk, scoring twice and driving in a pair as Bloomingdale picked up a Pool C opening game victory, 7-2.

“The past two years we’ve taken a loss our first game of the Saladino tournament, and we’ve dropped games to (Steinbrenner) both years,” Harman said. “Coming out and beating them was something we really wanted.”

Senior Jacob Magadan took to the mound for the Bulls and tossed six innings, yielding one run on seven hits and filling the zone with five strikeouts to earn the win.

Bulls senior Jacob Magadan improved to 3-0 with six innings for the Bulls.

Magadan was in complete command of all three of his pitches on the day, and said it was his fastball resulting in ground outs that made the difference.

“Slider was looking good, changeup was looking good and the fastball was getting to the barrel for ground balls,” Magadan said. “So, really everything was on today.”

After the win, Magadan said he was pleased after hearing some outside rumblings about the Bulls schedule through the first three weeks.

“We were 6-0 heading into this tournament, and we’ve heard people say we haven’t played the best teams yet,” Magadan said. “But Steinbrenner is a pretty good team, and we are really happy to have this one.”

Bloomingdale right field Coop Hinson fires a ball back into the infield after making a catch. Hinson was 2-for-4 at the plate, scoring one run.

“First six games were an eye-opener for our squad,” Harman added. “Now people are getting to know who we are, now we are the team everyone wants to try and come get.”

Vince Dinzeo’s RBI double to right drove in a pair for the Bulls in the second, and Bloomingdale (7-0) built on that lead with an Alex Vasquez RBI single the next inning.

Coop Hinson’s single, and a double from Harman in the fifth put runners aboard for Bobby Rossi’s RBI sac fly and Dawson Rankin’s RBI double, and the undefeated Bulls had built a big enough cushion to get comfortable.

Dawson Rankin drops a double into shallow right to drive in a run for the Bulls in the fifth.

Trailing five runs, Steinbrenner (4-2) mounted a solid sixth inning, getting to Magadan a bit with singles from Jorge Romero and JW Stephens (2-for-3, double), before a two-out single to right from Dominic Sardegna (2-for-2) put the Warriors on the board.

Harman’s final at-bat resulted in a two-run single to give the Bulls some added insurance and lock up the win.

Steinbrenner added one run in the seventh as two errors let Bryce Andrews cross the plate after the second hit of the game from Austin Liss.

Despite five combined errors, the day’s game actually featured some pretty solid defense, highlighted by a nice snag of a line drive by Harman at short, followed by a dive to tag the back of a runner too far off of second base – one of three double-plays of which Harman would be a part in the win.

“I’m a four-year guy and I’m out here for my squad,” said Harman, who made the transition to short this year after two seasons at third base. “I’m always here for my boys, I’m comfortable after backing up (University of Alabama freshman) Colby (Shelton) last year, I feel like I know shortstop like the back of my hand.”

On the other side, Stephens had a nice game behind the plate throwing out a pair of runners at second base, while his counterpart Dinzeo picked a runner off of first in the sixth inning for the Bulls.

Bloomingdale will take on Strawberry Crest on Monday at 7pm, while Steinbrenner will square off with Newsome in Monday’s 4pm game.
