LUTZ – Steinbrenner has named Chenzo Scanio as the Warriors new head baseball coach. Scanio, a graduate of Tampa Catholic (’16) and Greensboro College (NC) in 2020, becomes just the second coach in program history replacing Hillsborough County’s all-time high school baseball wins leader John Crumbley.

“I’m excited and nervous a little bit, but definitely looking forward to the challenge of playing Hillsborough County teams,” he said. “It’s a dogfight every night, and there is probably not better baseball in the country than right here.”

Scanio, 26, spent a season on the staff at Greensboro before spending three years as the recruiting coordinator at Guilford College (NC) – both NCAA Division III programs.

“My time around those programs (at Greensboro and Guilford) were incredible opportunities for a guy my age,” he said. “I’m grateful to those coaches for giving me that chance.”

Scanio said as recently as six months ago he had no plans of coaching at the high school level, but added that in his mind he had a shortlist of programs in his hometown that could draw his interest.

“My fiancé and I get married in November and are both from Tampa … but if you would have asked me six months ago if I would have taken a high school coaching job, I don’t know what my answer would have been,” he said. “When we had those discussions about coming back home, I always said there was  a shortlist of those jobs that I would be interested in, and Steinbrenner was definitely on that list.”

Scanio was offered and accepted the job last month, but had to wait for the HCSD to update its computer system before his official onboarding, which happened on Monday.

Along with his coaching duties, Scanio joins Steinbrenner’s teaching staff in the science department. And though he hasn’t had any one-on-one contact with any players yet, he’s been putting in work on social media to get to know the returning Warriors players through their summer ball programs.

“It’s kind of brand new for me still – to an extent,” Scanio said. “For the last three weeks, I’ve done a lot of Twitter research – watching a lot of video from Perfect Game and PBR and those things. I’m really looking forward to getting to know our players in person, beyond those highlights and the stats from last year.”

Scanio said longtime Warriors assistant coaches Steve Morgan and Shaun Fowler will return to the coaching staff for the 2025 season.
