Sickles junior Dylan Eskew kept Plant off the board and added a two-run homer to the Gryphons win over the Panthers. |
1. Sickles (14-3) – Sickles finds itself atop our list for the first time this season after handing Plant a loss, 2-0, on Thursday. The game was the Gryphons lone challenge of the week, and junior Dylan Eskew proved up to the task allowing just five hits across 6 2/3 scoreless innings on the mound and coming through at the plate with a two-run home run to support his cause. Sickles has a test on the road against Alonso is set for Wednesday, before games against Hillsborough and Middleton as well this week. [Last Week’s Ranking: 2]
2. Plant (14-3) – Well Plant finds itself narrowly edged in this week’s poll after two weeks at the top, after dropping a tight 2-0, district game to Sickles. The Panthers have split with the Gryphons on the year, but the recent loss played with our voters this week. Plant did pick up a 1-0 win against Newsome last week, and will have to contend with Riverview on Wednesday, before wrapping up Class 8A-District 5 play against Steinbrenner on Thursday. [Last Week’s Ranking: 1]
King senior Justice Thompson is hitting .407 on the year with 17 RBI. |
3. King (15-3) – King did its job against Hillsborough and Chamberlain in district games last week, and on its current three-game win streak has had solid production from Justice Thompson, who is 7-for-12, with two doubles, six runs scored, six RBI and five stolen bases over the span. This is a big week for the Lions as the team will have revenge on their minds in district tilts against Gaither to determine No. 2 in Class 7A-District 8 tournament seeding on the road Wednesday, the faces top seed Leto at home on Thursday, and wraps up with a game against Jefferson on Saturday. Whew, a challenging five-day stretch for sure. [Last Week’s Ranking: 3]

CDS senior Frank Furey. |
4. Carrollwood Day (15-1) – A very impressive win against 7A’s Winter Haven, 2-1 as senior Frank Furey tossed a complete-game to lead the Patriots. CDS also added a mercy-rule win over Bell Creek to its week, which included Furey coming through again – this time with a HR. The Patriots have a chance at undefeated Calvary Christian (ranked No. 4 in the state by MaxPreps.com) on Friday. [Last Week’s Ranking: T6]
5. Leto (13-4) – If you haven’t yet seen Falcons junior Christian Suarez pitch, make plans to head to King on Thursday as he takes his 7-0 record on the line against a mighty King lineup. He was outstanding in a pitching duel against Brandon’s BJ Carter as Leto escaped with a 2-1 on Friday. However, a big tip of the cap goes to last Tuesday’s starter – senior Jakob Ryley – who worked six scoreless innings in a 7-0, district win against Gaither. The Falcons face Freedom Wednesday, before traveling to King on Thursday. [Last Week’s Ranking: T6]
Leto senior pitcher Jakob Ryley tossed six scoreless innings in a Falcons win over Gaither last week |
6. Cambridge Christian (14-2) – The Lancers saw its 13-game win streak snapped dropping an 11-5 district game to Lakeland Christian last Friday and it has caused a little slide down the list. Cambridge Christian did pick up wins over Seffner Christian and Hernando Christian last week. Things DO NOT get easier this week with games at Sarasota Cardinal Mooney Tuesday, and a big one at Skyway against Bishop McLaughlin on Thursday. [Last Week’s Ranking: 4]

7. Plant City (11-4) – The Raiders dropped one to Strawberry Crest on Tuesday in the team’s only game of the week. A pair of district games at home against Bloomingdale (both are 4-2 in 8A-6) and at East Bay on the schedule this week and the Raiders have a chance to control their destiny in the upcoming district tournament. [Last Week’s Ranking: 5]
Bloomingdale’s Dominic Gonnella has six RBI in the Bulls last four games. |
8. Bloomingdale (11-5) – Bloomingdale dominated district wins over East Bay and Durant last week, and continue in 8A-6 play on Wednesday looking to even the season series with Plant City, before facing Riverview on Thursday. The Bulls have won four-in-a-row (including three-straight shutouts) as sophomore Dominic Gonnella has gone 9-for-15 at the plate, with two triples, five runs scored, six RBI and two stolen bases in that stretch. [Last Week’s Ranking: 14]
9. Gaither (10-5) – Gaither has a win in its pocket over King, but Cowboys host the Lions on Wednesday to decide the No. 2 district seed. Gaither defeated Alonso by a run on Tuesday, but came up flat against Leto in a 7-0 loss on Thursday. Along with the game against King, the Cowboys face district opponent Chamberlain this Thursday and travel out to take on Strawberry Crest on Saturday. [Last Week’s Ranking: 10]
10. Wharton (12-4) – Last Tuesday was an ugly one as the Wildcats took it on the chin in a 10-2 loss to Steinbrenner. But Wharton responded by staying undefeated in 8A-4 with a 1-0, district win over Freedom as senior Duncan Pastore was on his game, tossing a 2-hit shutout with eight strikeouts. The Wildcats already have the district tournament top-seed in the bag, but have one more district game to play traveling to Strawberry Crest on Thursday. Wharton also faces Alonso on the road on Saturday. [Last Week’s Ranking: 9]
The Next Five:
11. Jesuit (12-5) – [Last Week’s Ranking: 8]
12. Berkeley Prep (12-6) – [Last Week’s Ranking: 13]
13. Newsome (10-5) – [Last Week’s Ranking: 12]
14. Jefferson (10-5) – [Last Week’s Ranking: NR]
15. Strawberry Crest (9-6) – [Last Week’s Ranking: NR]
