1. Plant (13-2) – It’s pretty simple, want to be No. 1? Win. Plant battled Alonso in its only game last week before pulling off a 4-1, extra-inning win as J.D. Urso scored the decider in the ninth on a wild pitch. A pair of Top 15 teams are slated this week as the Panthers face Newsome on Tuesday, before trying to lock up the top spot in the district tournament with a game at Sickles on Thursday.
2. Sickles (13-3) – The Gryphons took down Freedom and district opponent Steinbrenner last week to leapfrog King this week, as senior Josh Luther was 4-for-6 in the two wins with a run scored and three RBI. This sets up a battle of No. 1 vs. No. 2 as Sickles hosts Plant on Thursday. The Gryphons will need to come out stronger than the previous meeting where the Panthers cruised to a 9-0 win.
3. King (13-3) – Victim of an incredibly tough district slate including a Leto team hungery to make a statement, the Lions dropped an ugly one, 7-0 to the Falcons. King took care of business in a big win over Tampa Bay Tech later in the week and have district games against Chamberlain and Hillsborough this week and needs to work stuff out. The following week will be the big test to the Lions as the team looks to avenge district losses to Gaither (April 10) and Leto (April 12).

4. Cambridge Christian (12-1) – Another situation where you take care of your business and you move up. The Lancers have won 11-straight including a mercy-rule win over Shorecrest Prep and a win agains Brooks-DeBartolo last week. Sophomore Tilden Agee sparked the latter win with a pair of doubles and a home run, finishing with three RBI in the game.
5. Plant City (11-3) – The Raiders “we win one, they win one” approach the last six games isn’t helping especially with two of those losses coming in Class 8A-District 6, like last week’s 3-2 loss to East Bay. Junior Parker Messick improved to 5-0 on the mound in a win against Durant, while Dylan Robinson added his second home run of the season and tosses 2 2/3 innings of relief in the victory.
T-6. Carrollwood Day (13-1) – A first for the year in our rankings – a tie – finds CDS up a spot but sharing it with Leto. The Patriots took care of business three times last week, defeating Brooks-DeBartolo, Tampa Prep and New York’s St. Francis. Junior Blake Hooker took over the top offensive spot for the Patriots leading the way with a .435 average, 15 runs scored, four doubles and 17 RBI on the season.
T-6. Leto (11-4) – Christian Suarez got his marquee win on the season, shutting out King in a complete-game effort on Tuesday and moving him to 6-0, with a 0.38 ERA on the year. The Falcons followed that up with a decisive win against Chamberlain and are in the driver’s seat at 5-0 in Class 7A-District 8. Senior catcher Jackson Alvord picked up a pair of RBI in each of the Falcons wins last week, and is .421 with 13 RBI on the year. District tilts against Gaither and Hillsborough are on deck this week, with a week capper at Brandon as well.
8. Jesuit (11-3) – Joel Brewer and Jack Anderson came up big as the Tigers took a road win, 1-0, off of Jefferson to stay atop the district, then added a mercy-rule win over Middleton to the week. The Tigers go at it FOUR TIMES in four days starting Wednesday facing Jacksonville Bishop Kenny, Georgia power Parkview, Spoto and Gainesville this week.

9. Wharton (11-3) – Honestly, Wharton has probably deserved better in our rankings this season. The Wildcats have won six-in-a-row, including decisive wins over Brandon and Wiregrass Ranch last week and have dominated district play by a combined score of 22-3 in four games. Junior Brian Baughman has been getting it done on the mound with a 3-1 record, and at the plate hitting .500 with 16 runs scored. Wharton matches up with Steinbrenner and Freedom this week, with a win against the Patriots essentially locking up the district top seed.
10. Gaither (9-4) – The Cowboys did what was expected with 10-run wins over Chamberlain and Hillsborough last week and keep that district race with Leto tight. Senior Orlando Arevalo picked up five RBI last week and is now hitting .442 on the year for the Cowboys. A non-district game against Alonso and another game against the aforementioned Falcons this week will be big tests for Gaither.
